HISTORY OF WIGCA

While the Wisconsin Genetic Counseling Association is a new state chapter of NSGC as of 2018, but its roots began in the 1990s with the formation of several independent specialty genetic groups.

Two of the largest founding organizations were Wisconsin Cancer Risk Program Network (WICRPN); a group of oncology genetic experts with the mission to improve access and education in cancer genetics, and Wisconsin Healthcare in Prenatal Genetics (WHiP); a group of prenatal specialists devoted to the advancement of genetics in family planning and reproductive care. As these organizations grew alongside the professional role of genetic counselors, WIGCA was formed as an overarching, inclusive network to promote community and awareness for all genetic counselors in every specialty and setting.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Wisconsin’s Wordplay:

Wisconsin Cancer Risk Program Network (WICRPN)

The network was first established in December of 1999 to provide an opportunity for Wisconsin cancer genetics health professionals to:

  • Collaborate on the best practice of risk assessment and management

  • Identify and discuss actual or potential dilemmas in the realm of cancer genetics

  • Develop an intrastate support network for families impacted by hereditary cancer

  • Review current data and new developments in the rapidly changing field of cancer genetics

  • Establish a way for referring providers to identify quality cancer risk assessment programs

  • Explore network research opportunities

  • Facilitate cancer counseling of family members within the state.

Wisconsin Healthcare in Prenatal Genetics (WHiP)

The Wisconsin Healthcare in Prenatal genetics (WHiP) group is dedicated to connecting prenatal healthcare providers with interest in genetics across the state of Wisconsin.  Through the listserv and an annual education meeting, WHiP aims to provide healthcare providers with updated information and a forum to discuss topics regarding genetics and genetic testing within the prenatal community.

WHiP was established in 2015 as an email listserv aimed at connecting prenatal genetic counselors across that state of Wisconsin and allowing them to post questions and share information about educational activities and events occurring around the region.  Through growth and interest, WHiP has expanded to include non-genetic counselors, as well as collaboration with other subspecialty groups to provide a more robust discussion forum.  WHiP also conducts an annual education conference, organized and facilitated by WHiP members.
